The Faculty of International Data Science in Musashino University's Distance Learning Division (planned for establishment in 2026) will provide programs for developing global data scientists and for re-skilling professionals, based on the core research experience-linked learning platform of the Faculty of Data Science. Furthermore, it will promote international and industry-academia collaboration through cooperation with the Asia AI Institute.
Features of Faculty of International Data Science
Musashino University Faculty of International Data Science, (currently applying for approval of its establishment) aims to nurture individuals who will make full use of and apply data science knowledge and techniques in various fields of the natural and social environment, discover issues from a broad social and international perspective, and lead creative activities to create technological and economic value through the use of artificial intelligence and big data analysis. We will develop human resources who are oriented toward and lead creative activities that create technological and economic value through the use of artificial intelligence and big data analysis. We will also cultivate human resources who, with a broad international perspective, will discover issues on a global scale by making full use of data science, and who will lead international creative activities to solve problems and create value by utilizing artificial intelligence and big data analysis. In addition, the program aims to develop human resources who can lead creative activities to create technological and economic value in an increasingly complex social environment by making full use and application of data science knowledge and technology. This will lead to a bachelor's degree in data science. In addition, students can advance to the master's program to obtain a master's degree in as few as two years (for those who enter with a bachelor's degree).
The faculty has established the Asia AI Research Institute, which is oriented toward international collaboration and industry-academia cooperation, and all faculty members participate in this institute. All faculty members participate in this institute, where research activities based on the revolutionary concept of "incorporating human activities into system architecture" are being promoted. The great advantage of participating in the Asian AI Research Institute is that you can acquire hands-on experience in cutting-edge research activities (both remote and face-to-face participation is possible).
The Faculty and the Asian AI Research Institute share 7 major data science skills: 1) AI and knowledge base design, 2) AI implementation methods, 3) AI application creation and social implementation, 4) Python programming, 5) Database and SQL, 6) VR and XR construction, and 7) Generative AI application methods are shared. Research results obtained using these skills are widely published internationally.

Hybrid learning allows you to learn in your own style.
The first characteristic of this faculty is that the education and research activities of the Musashino University Faculty of Data Science, which have traditionally required students to commute to the campus, will be deployed in cyberspace as much as possible. Therefore, the research experience-based learning and three courses that have been the hallmark of the faculty will be deployed in cyberspace using a variety of tools, and research and educational activities will be conducted in the newly established cyber classrooms. Accordingly, by utilizing mechanisms such as recording and simultaneous delivery, a flexible learning environment will be realized for students in diverse living environments, regardless of their location or lifestyle, to accommodate each student's individual circumstances. Furthermore, the research experience conducted at the Asia AI Institute is a hybrid type of learning provided not only in cyberspace but also in the real world, which is what makes it essentially different from conventional distance learning or cyberspace-only universities.
Earn a bachelor's or master's degree in as little as two years
Second, the program will offer an integrated program, including a master's degree, for domestic students, overseas students, and working adults. Although the length of the program varies depending on the credits already earned by each student, it is possible to obtain a bachelor's and master's degree in data science in as little as two years (in the case of bachelor's admission).
Learn from anywhere in the world without language restrictions
Third, by using a multilingualization system equipped with the latest machine translation, etc., we will transcend national borders and language restrictions to create an international research and education environment. Specifically, we will implement a double degree program in collaboration with the curricula of other overseas universities.
Learn while you work
Fourth, the bachelor admission system will be used to enable working adults to study while working. Here, we envision the use of this program as a reskilling program for data science personnel in companies, etc.

Expected Career
The career paths of graduates of Musashino University Faculty of Data Science, a commuter falucty that shares a common curriculum with Musashino University Faculty of International Data Science, are diverse: according to 2024 data, 83% found employment, and 48% went on to work in companies related to information, telecommunications, and information services. While the school is unique in that graduates go on to various fields of study, 12% went on to graduate school.

I started with the question, ‘What is research, anyway?’ But as I observed the professors enjoying their research and sharing their findings, I gradually began to understand what research is all about. The process of turning ideas into reality, the challenges and excitement of successfully creating something—these experiences made research increasingly enjoyable for me. Ultimately, I was able to present my findings at an international conference and compile my research results in a short period of time. All the experiences over the two years, such as balancing work and family life while studying, will serve as a foundation for my future endeavours.Regarding the company, I believe that my graduate school experience can serve as an example of reskilling activities, inspiring and encouraging my colleagues. By sharing a mindset of embracing new challenges within the company and increasing the number of employees who take on such challenges, I believe this can be seen as the outcome of what was learned in graduate school. In the future, I aim to contribute to the company through research outcomes and by pursuing research to its fullest extent.

Data science is often perceived as covering a wide range of fields, but this graduate programme truly offers a comprehensive education, covering various programming languages and system construction methods. It also covers the fundamentals of data science typically taught at the undergraduate level, providing a diverse array of lectures that span from foundational to research-level content. Although I transferred from another field, I was able to conduct two years of fulfilling research, culminating in a presentation at an international conference. I strongly feel that the knowledge gained here has directly contributed to my post-graduation career at an NGO focused on natural environments, and I believe this experience will be valuable across various industries.
As is obvious, data is used to make decisions in society, and data science has infinite applications. The perspectives gained in this graduate school for examining social issues from multiple angles, logical thinking, and programming knowledge to implement these ideas have made me realize the practical applications of data science in addressing real-world challenges.
