A preliminary survey was conducted by the research team of Politeknik Electroniks Negeri Surabaya (PENS), our partner institution in Indonesia, in preparation for the joint fieldwork scheduled for March 2024. Based on images collected from surveys of rivers, coastal areas, estuaries, and mangrove forests in Surabaya, plastic waste hotspots suitable for fieldwork were identified. Furthermore, the selection of necessary tools for waste collection and the design of related equipment were carried out collaboratively by the teams from PENS and MUDS.

1) The Jagir River is one of the main rivers in Surabaya. This flow comes from the Kalimas river. The water flow of the Jagir River is strong and hard to access so it is not possible to carry out the project.

2) The Suroboyo Bridge is a bridge that surrounds the beach, it also functions as a tourist attraction. Even though volunteers occasionally does clean up, the main challenge faced is the accumulation of waste that continuously comes from various sources, not only from the river and from the sea, but also from land.

3) Suroboyo Park is a park in Surabaya which offers a beach with white sand and shells. This place also functions as a port and processing center for fish caught by fishermen. With its attractiveness, this place has become a popular destination for many visitors. The cleanliness of this place is maintained because there is a manager.

4) Mangrove Wonorejo is an ecotourism destination that offers unique educational and recreational experiences. This place is designed to provide a deeper understanding of the beauty and importance of the mangrove ecosystem. Although locals diligently clean up rubbish in this area three times a week, the main challenge still lies in the continuous flow of rubbish from rivers and the sea.

5) Pantai Kenjeran Lama is a well-managed tourist area and is frequently visited by visitors. The cleanliness of this place is well maintained, and there is the Suroboyo Bridge which helps maintain the stability of the water, as well as many tourist boats that pass around this area.

6) Pantai RIA kenjeran is managed by a private business entity which is responsible for its management and regulation. Even though this place looks well organized, it is poorly maintained. Many fishermen use this beach as a place to anchor their ships. When we visited the beach, visitors were few or quiet.
