HAPPY DATA HOUR — From Ariake to the World
A culture born in Silicon Valley now connects Tokyo, Indonesia, and Thailand — as we head into the next year
Figure 1. HAPPY DATA HOUR is held on the second Friday of every month at Musashino University Ariake Campus.
Hey everyone! HAPPY DATA HOUR, hosted by MIDS (Musashino University International Data Science), has successfully completed 8 editions. Starting from the Ariake Campus in Tokyo, we've expanded to ANOTHER 8 in Meguro, OAKWOOD SURABAYA in Indonesia, a Zoom connection with KMITL in Thailand, and back to Ariake Campus — growing steadily while traveling between Japan and abroad. In this post, we share the origins of the event, our journey so far, and the schedule for the coming year.
The Origin: "HAPPY DATA HOUR" in San Francisco
When I was running a startup in Silicon Valley, I regularly attended an event called "HAPPY DATA HOUR" held in the SoMa district of San Francisco. At the headquarters of Keen IO, a big data analytics and visualization company, data scientists and entrepreneurs would gather to exchange ideas about venture startups and the industry over beer.
Data scientists from companies like Salesforce, Nest (which had just been acquired by Google at the time), and SendGrid would come together, openly discussing the latest data strategies and growth tactics. It felt like the entire neighborhood was one giant research lab.
One reason Silicon Valley remains the holy land of innovation is this culture of "openly learning from and helping each other." Even strangers would discuss technical challenges, share job opportunities, and seek feedback on new products. This cultural soil is what nurtures data scientists and engineers into indispensable drivers of business growth.
At the time, the lean startup methodology of rapidly iterating through "Build—Measure—Learn" cycles was gaining tremendous attention, and data scientists were becoming essential to this process. The key insight was that "to make failure harder," you need "a scientific validation process." Airbnb even created a VP of Data-Driven Growth — that’s how central data-driven growth strategy had become to companies.
I wrote about this experience in detail in my article for Nikkei BIG DATA: "Entrepreneurs and Scientists Gathering in San Francisco — Becoming Indispensable for Growth."
Our Journey So Far (8 Editions Completed)
Since our 1st edition on July 11, 2025, we have continued monthly events based at the Ariake Campus. At the 4th edition (2025/10/24), we held our first overseas event at PENS (Surabaya, Indonesia). At the 5th edition (2025/12/19), we collaborated with a Research Colloquium by Prof. Fukuda and Prof. Kim from the University of Washington Bothell, connecting with KMITL in Thailand via Zoom for a truly international exchange.
After that, the 6th edition (2026/1/20) was co-hosted with U-NEXT HOLDINGS at ANOTHER 8 in Meguro, the 7th edition (2026/2/6) was our second Indonesia event at OAKWOOD SURABAYA, and the 8th edition (2026/2/13) brought us back to the Ariake Campus as we approached the MIDS launch. Moving between Japan and abroad, our community continues to grow steadily.

Why We Continue HAPPY DATA HOUR
The biggest lesson I learned in Silicon Valley is that innovation is never born alone. In a relatively small area of San Francisco, big data companies of all sizes coexist, and casual events are held constantly. That environment is what nurtures people and sparks innovation.
MIDS is not just another department — it aims to create a new ecosystem centered on data science × international collaboration × industry-academia partnership. HAPPY DATA HOUR is the foundation for building the community that powers this culture. From Ariake to Surabaya, from Surabaya to Meguro, an online connection with KMITL in Thailand, and back to Ariake. We keep going, changing locations but carrying the same spirit.
Join Us!
Non-applicants are absolutely welcome. Students, researchers, professionals, entrepreneurs — anyone interested in data science and AI. Just like the original HAPPY DATA HOUR in Silicon Valley, the most valuable thing is meeting people from diverse backgrounds.
We look forward to meeting fellow companions who want to change the world with data.
Work hard, play hard, and never forget to be grateful!
