Musashino University Announces Establishment of Faculty of International Data Science, School of Distance Learning

Faculty of International Data Science, School of Distance Learning, Musashino University.

Faculty of International Data Science is a faculty dedicated to learning new data science and artificial intelligence disciplines. It focuses on data science aimed at solving international and global challenges, as well as local challenges concerning the natural and social environments in various regions around the world (challenges occurring in the regions where students themselves reside, which are simultaneously global challenges shared by many regions), and the creation of new artificial intelligence. Through “research-experience-linked learning,” students acquire knowledge relevant to these challenges and the technologies to solve them, learning a new academic discipline of data science and artificial intelligence. This faculty realizes a new data science education based on the following five core features.

(Pillar 1) Curriculum for learning data science solutions to local social issues and global natural environmental challenges, plus new AI creation methods:

Students aim to solve issues occurring in their own local communities—which are also global challenges faced by many regions—by acquiring data science knowledge and skills while remaining in their local area (expanding local insights into global intelligence).

(Pillar 2) Hybrid learning conducted in both cyberspace and the physical world:

Based on a remote education environment, the “research experience-linked learning” model, which emphasizes individualized instruction, can also be taken in person at the Ariake Campus. This allows students to utilize an educational environment that integrates both remote education and the physical campus.

(Pillar 3) A curriculum enabling degree attainment without residing in the city center or while working in one's place of residence:

Students can receive education and participate in research through a curriculum equivalent to the on-campus Data Science program within a remote environment. Being based on distance education reduces financial burden.

(Pillar 4) Learning in an international research and educational environment transcending language barriers:

Lectures utilize new translation systems, providing opportunities for international communication among students and participation in international research.

(Pillar 5) Research-Experience-Integrated Learning Activities through Participation in Cutting-Edge Research Projects:

Students receive research guidance from their first year via remote systems. Research activities are advanced based on the groundbreaking concept of “incorporating human activities into data science systems.” For “Research-Experience-Integrated Learning,” research guidance is available at the Ariake Campus.

Specifically, students from Japan and abroad engage in data science research through seminar-style sessions. These sessions utilize international or local information sources and cutting-edge technologies, facilitated by communication-based (remote) education systems. Participants tackle research themes addressing international/global issues or local challenges from the second semester of their first year through their third year, acquiring necessary knowledge and skills. Students, both domestic and international, engage with “local issues arising in their respective regions, as well as global challenges faced by many regions,” while residing locally. They utilize and create data science knowledge, techniques, and methodologies through a remote education environment to tackle these issues. The process by which local students acquire data science knowledge and techniques via the remote education environment and learn/research solutions to research problems is studied as research experience-linked learning.

Furthermore, pathways to graduate studies in master's and doctoral programs are opened as follows:

(1) Working Professionals: Can obtain a Bachelor's degree in Data Science in as little as one year.

Continuing directly into the master's program allows for obtaining a Master's degree in an additional year (planned).

(2) High school students: Can obtain a bachelor's degree in data science in four years.

By continuing on to the master's program, they can obtain a master's degree in one additional year (planned).

(3) International students enrolled at overseas partner universities: 1-2 year double degree program.

By continuing on to the master's program, you can earn a master's degree in one additional year (planned).
